Monday Makeover: Supplements to Smoothies

Adopting a healthy lifestyle does not mean saying good-bye to the things you love forever. It’s a continuous shift; a shift away from the things that are not serving you, and towards that which allows you to shine.

One of the things I enjoy about a healthy lifestyle is not having to worry about taking medications to combat health problems. I really take the same stance when it comes to supplements. I will take herbs and vitamins in pill form when necessary to correct an imbalance, but not long term as I truly prefer to receive my nutrition in food form. After all, food is medicine.

So here is my daily multi-vitamin

I really enjoy the boost I receive from a morning smoothie. My smoothies tend to include greens, such as kale or spinach, fruit/ berries, almond milk, yogurt, and superfoods such as bee pollen, maca, and cacao powder (of course).

I really prefer smoothies over supplements or juicing as they are broken down to help your body assimilate the nutrients more effectively, yet they still have the bulk and fiber of the vegetables and fruits so that they have more of a lasting effect, and don’t spike the blood sugar.

Some of my favorites are chocolate peanut butter, mounds (not really with the candy bar, but taste like it), and mint chocolate smoothies.

Here is the recipe for the mint chocolate smoothie

1 cup spinach
1 cup frozen banana
1 1/2  cup almond milk (or enough for desired consistency)
2 tsp dried peppermint
1/2 tsp. spirulina (gives it the beautiful green color)

blend until smooth, then add

raw cacao or dark chocolate chips (or a little of both if you are as big a fan of chocolate as I am)

pulse the drink until the chips are the desired size.

Then enjoy your beautiful green mint chocolate chip drink.
