I have often heard herbalists claim that everyone in modern society should take oat straw. Pretty steep claim, but I have been finding myself recommending it repeatedly lately. So, I thought in an ongoing effort to simplify health & harmony, it would be a great idea to break it down.
Oat straw is classified as an herb. It is the young version of the oat plant, so is harvested before the oat actually develops. It’s considered a nerve tonic, which means that it soothes the nervous system, and calms anxiety. The reason for the broad recommendation is that the pace of our modern society tends to tax the sympathetic nervous system, or the fight or flight response. This long term fight or flight mode creates ongoing stress in the body and mind, which over time leads to health problems such as autoimmune issues, depression, and/ or anxiety. This beautiful herb soothes those frazzled nerves to restore health and harmony.
Milky oats, as it’s also called, has nutritional benefits as well. High in B vitamins, oat straw helps increase energy and metabolism. It also provides vitamins A and C, calcium, magnesium, iron, and amino acids – the building blocks of protein, which are some of the essentials for women.
These are some of the reasons I find myself agreeing with the recommendations to add oat straw to your bag of tricks for health & harmony, and why I have included it as part of the Happy Mama and 101 Sheep blends
When I was a senior in high school, we had to choose an author to do a report on. This report was due at the end of the year, so the intention was to spend your entire senior year researching this person, and reading their work. It was almost like a high school thesis.
I really had no idea who I wanted to spend an entire year of my life researching, and didn’t have a lot of time to make my choice. I looked up some quick descriptions, and paired that with some gut instinct to make my choice – Henry David Thoreau.
Henry David Thoreau was most well known for going off grid to live in the woods at Walden Pond, which was also the setting of his very famous book. His reason was to live his life deliberately.
Do you live life deliberately?
I have so much more appreciation for this now, even though I did think it was pretty cool waaaaaay back when I was in high school. Sometimes life can feel very reactive, even when we are making the effort to be proactive.
His famous quote that always stuck with me is “Life is frittered away with detail, simplify, simplify”
While I don’t know about going totally off grid, I do appreciate the healing effects of stepping out into nature. Not only for the stress relief of unplugging, and breathing some fresh air, but also for the simplicity of it all. The “weeds” growing all around you with the amazing power to improve your health. The uneven terrain giving abundant opportunity for functional and green fitness. It’s so simple, yet we’ve made it so complicated.
I’d like to spend some attention on getting back to basics in this overly complicated world, and embrace the simplicity. I want to explore simplifying health and harmony.
The other day I looked out, and thought it was foggy. As I ventured out, I realized the haze that I saw was yellow. It was actually a pollen fog! Pollen is never really shy here in North Carolina, but it seems to be outdoing itself this year. It actually looks like a dusting of snow on everything, except it’s yellow, but not in the “don’t eat the yellow snow” sort of way.
I was suddenly very grateful for the cold I had earlier this winter. I know that sounds weird, but as I was recovering from my cold, every morning I drank lemon/ ginger water with honey and cayenne added. Usually as I feel better, I go back to regular water in the mornings, but for some reason this time I intuitively just kept drinking it day after day. Now I realize, how smart my intuition is.
If you don’t already know, local, raw honey is a great way to reduce allergy symptoms. The thought is that when you eat local honey that hasn’t been processed, you slowly expose yourself to environmental pollen, and create a desensitization, which over time means less symptoms.
Honey gets high accolades for it’s allergy relief, but did you know all of the other amazing benefits of honey?
First of all, honey is considered nature’s antibiotic. It has antibacterial properties that were first known to be taken advantage of by the ancient Egyptians. You can take it by mouth for internal infections, and you can apply it directly to a wound for treatment. You can use it for preventative wound care, for burns, pressure ulcers, and infected wounds.
Honey is unbeatable for a cold. It is soothing and healing to a sore throat. Try adding a little cayenne to it for extra power. It also reduces coughing. If you look at cough relief products in your natural health stores, most of them are honey based, so may as well go directly to the source.
Honey is incredible for the skin. Honey is moisturizing and a gentle exfoliant. Exfolitating your skin with harsh products can actually leave small scars on your skin, but honey hits the right balance of exfoliating enough to reveal your glow, and moisturize while it’s at it. Honey’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties make it a fantastic treatment for acne. You can put it on your face and leave it on for awhile like a mask, or just wash with it. My preference is a honey mask.
It’s a far better alternative to sugar, and actually contains nutrients. That means that it’s not just empty calories. It should be noted that heating honey will kill the beneficial properties, so I don’t cook with it. It’s also the reason that you want unprocessed (or raw) honey.
Honey is always a staple in our house, and lately it’s been a major player, so I thought I’d share my gratitude for honey with you 🙂

Loving your life mate is fulfilling and frustrating! Opening yourself up to be vulnerable is uncomfortable, even scary. That vulnerability can bring you closer to someone than you ever thought possible, but it can also do the opposite if ego jumps in. Watch the video to find out how to get out of gridlock and grow as a pair!
Next time conflict arises, what will you contribute?
You are the CEO, CFO, HR rep, and Office Manager of your family (did I leave any out?) Any business that wants to be successful needs a clear vision, so everyone is working towards the same goal. The same is true of your family. If everyone is pulling the rope in a different direction, it won’t be long before YOU’RE feeling pulled in every direction. This is a great resource for setting vision for you and your family, so you can love your life rather than spend it managing busy.
Do you feel like your family is united and moving towards a common goal?
Where are you in the process of creating your goals?
Maybe you haven’t even watched the videos yet. That’s ok. The first step is stop beating yourself up. After that, identify time that is realistic for you to work on it, one piece at a time.
Sometimes we work at a pace that’s slower than we’d like, but it doesn’t mean we stop. Stopping means we never realize our dreams, but slowly chipping away at your goals means you are in a constant state of achieving your dreams.
It’s easy to find inspiration when it’s all around you. This is a great tool for your kids as well, and something they naturally gravitate towards. Think of your bedroom walls in middle school 🙂
Now we ground our visions in reality by giving ourselves measurable and timelines. Find out more about making your goals SMART, and how to keep them at the top of your mind by using the your calendar. If it’s not in your calendar, it doesn’t happen.
What’s your word? Share it with your family, or any one that keeps you accountable. Also, share it with me 🙂
It’s a great way to lift you up when you are having a defeated moment or day. It’s a great way to keep you centered when you are tempted to take on too much, and you can quickly reflect with one word what your real goals are.
Now, we get creative. Surround yourself with imagery that inspires you.
Do you feel lighter after getting that load off of your mind in the last video? It is so freeing!
This will give you a fighting chance to be where your feet are (feeling present), and will make a considerable difference in the harmony of your family. There’s a reason for that saying “happy wife, happy life” 🙂
When you feel tense, even only because you are processing the hundreds of things running around in your brain, your family feels it, often without even realizing it. But, when you are present, they relax and experience you!
This next piece is short and sweet, but don’t be fooled, it takes some thought. However, it’s a great way to keep you inspired with the mention of a word!
