Monday Makeover: Supplements to Smoothies

Adopting a healthy lifestyle does not mean saying good-bye to the things you love forever. It’s a continuous shift; a shift away from the things that are not serving you, and towards that which allows you to shine.

monday-makeover

One of the things I enjoy about a healthy lifestyle is not having to worry about taking medications to combat health problems. I really take the same stance when it comes to supplements. I will take herbs and vitamins in pill form when necessary to correct an imbalance, but not long term as I truly prefer to receive my nutrition in food form. After all, food is medicine.

So here is my daily multi-vitamin

Get It Girl! (1)

I really enjoy the boost I receive from a morning smoothie. My smoothies tend to include greens, such as kale or spinach, fruit/ berries, almond milk, yogurt, and superfoods such as bee pollen, maca, and cacao powder (of course).

I really prefer smoothies over supplements or juicing as they are broken down to help your body assimilate the nutrients more effectively, yet they still have the bulk and fiber of the vegetables and fruits so that they have more of a lasting effect, and don’t spike the blood sugar.

Some of my favorites are chocolate peanut butter, mounds (not really with the candy bar, but taste like it), and mint chocolate smoothies.

Here is the recipe for the mint chocolate smoothie

1 cup spinach
1 cup frozen banana
1 1/2  cup almond milk (or enough for desired consistency)
2 tsp dried peppermint
1/2 tsp. spirulina (gives it the beautiful green color)

blend until smooth, then add

raw cacao or dark chocolate chips (or a little of both if you are as big a fan of chocolate as I am)

pulse the drink until the chips are the desired size.

Then enjoy your beautiful green mint chocolate chip drink.

Apple Peanut Butter Pie

This was quite the put together, but came out delicious and rich tasting. Not to mention you don’t have to feel guilty with this one. We actually had it for breakfast.

Start with the filling

5-6 peeled and cut apples

2 parsnips

1 Tbsp cinnamon

1 Tbsp ghee (or butter)

water

1/2 cup peanut butter

Mix all the ingredients (except peanut butter) in a saucepan and add about 1/3 of the mixture worth of water. The amount of water may need to be adjusted by how juicy the apples are. Bring to a boil on high heat, then let simmer on low until the apples and parsnips are soft. Use a potato masher to mash it into a chunky applesauce texture. Then add peanut butter.

While the filling is cooking, prepare the crust.

The crust (adapted from the Perfect Paleo Pie Crust Recipe)

1/2 cup almond flour

1/2 cup chickpea flour

1/2 cup coconut flour

1/2 cup arrowroot or tapioca flour

1/2 cup cold butter or palm shortening

1 egg

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Mix the flours, then cut in the butter until pea sized. Add the egg and mix until it becomes a dough. Form into a ball, then flatten into a disc, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 20 min. After refrigerating, press the dough into a greased pie pan. Bake on 375 degrees for 10 min.

Finish it off: Add the filling to the pre-baked pie crust, and top with granola. I also lightly dabbed a little coconut oil on top to let the granola get a bit crispy. Make sure to read your granola ingredients, as they can be very high in sugar. We use our Nola Granola, which is a chocolate peanut butter granola that is naturally and minimally sweetened. You can order your own in the online Kalusion BouTEAque.

This was a great break from the same old thing. We really enjoyed it. I hope you do too!

4 Steps for the Best Day and Life – Part III

Now that you’ve woken up like a cat in Part I and pulled all the bad bacteria from your mouth and digestive system with coconut oil in Part II, we move on to the third step to starting our day in the best possible way.

Step 3. Lemon water
I often hear people talking about doing a cleanse. There are so many out there, but the most basic and effective cleanse is a glass of lemon water. The water can be warm or room 053_3000x2561_all-free-download.com_7935271temperature (just not cold), and squeeze the juice of half a lemon in it. Drink it about 15 – 30 minutes before eating breakfast for best results.

Drinking a glass of lemon water every morning will help to cleanse and detox your system, boost your immunity, clear up skin problems, fight wrinkles (woo hoo), help with weight loss, and so much more. Plus it’s tasty.
