It’s 2017! Have you made your vision board yet? More and more people are getting on board with visualizing their success to achieve goals, but is there really anything to it?

“…advice columnists tell us to “visualize success” or to “imagine our greatest possibilities”. While this is inspiring, is there actually a science behind this? The brief answer to this question is: yes. Although visualization was regarded as “new age hype” for many years, research has shown that there is a strong scientific basis for how and why visualization works. It is now a well-known fact that we stimulate the same brain regions when we visualize an action and when we actually perform that same action. For example, when you visualize lifting your right hand, it stimulates the same part of the brain that is activated when you actually lift your right hand. This shared area of brain activation when we imagine an action and perform it has been demonstrated extensively in the scientific literature.”
Simply put visualization is practicing an event before it even happens. Athletes have used this technique for years. When you let your mind run through the scenario of your success, you create a memory. So when you truly find yourself in the situation, your mind immediately knows what to do, and leads you to success.
So let’s get to it.
The first thing to get in order is what are your true goals? How do you get to your true goals, and past the sabotaging beliefs that block you from them? You have to clear your mind. However, for the great majority of us with a huge “to do list”, kids, and responsibilities it may not be effective to just stop what we’re doing and meditate. So to clear your mind, move your body. This is the foundation of yoga, which is a great way to accomplish this task. Another way is to go for a walk in a place that inspires you, and takes your mind off of your thoughts. For me, the best way is with Chakra Flow movement. I use music and movement that targets each of the chakras to clear out my mind, and immediately follow it with journaling on topic with the targeted chakra to get to my true desires about each of those areas of my life, and any blocks I may have. This first step is so crucial. Sometimes our goals are buried under cultural or familial expectations. Or we make goals for things we think we want such as better health, weight loss, more money, etc. but that isn’t the true root of your goal, and without the true inspiration – your “big WHY”, it’s difficult to dedicate yourself to the work it really takes to accomplish your goals. This always reminds me of the women I spoke with who wanted to lose 50 lbs by Valentine’s Day. Why 50 lbs? That was the last time she really felt good about herself? Why Valentine’s Day? She felt ready to be in a relationship again. Which meant her goal wasn’t to lose weight, it was to feel good about herself and get in a relationship again. Which goal do you think she’ll have better success in achieving? So you must take the time to get to your pure intentions.
Once you have that figured out, create a vision board or mind movie that represents those goals for you. Your vision board can be digital, and placed on your desktop, or you can cut and paste, and hang it on the wall where you will see it (by your bed is a great place so you see it as soon as you wake up, and before you go to bed). You can also make a mind movie with a slideshow of inspiring pictures, mantras, and music to watch at the beginning of your day. As far as I’m concerned, you can do all of the above, and completely surround yourself with inspiration. I also find that putting a picture of your “big WHY” on your board is a great motivator.
Be sure to stretch yourself with your goals. Last year, I achieved everything on my vision board by August, and I thought I had some lofty goals on there. You are your only limit, so reach for the stars.
Now we get down to work. Looking at those goals you have, decide how you will break them down into chunks. What do you want to accomplish each month in working towards those goals, each week, and each day? Make it concrete – use numbers, then track your numbers somewhere, such as your calendar, or in a spreadsheet.
One of the biggest ways to ensure you stay on track is with accountability. Last month, I wanted to dedicate myself to doing one thing for me per day, so I put it out there on social media to hold myself accountable, and I really did it, and am so glad I did. I really felt the difference that the simple act of taking care of me really made in my mood and focus on those hectic days.
